The Garden Nursery 2011 Part 2

Thought I'd start a new blog with the nursery as the other page is getting a bit full.

As I said on my last post, I'm very excited that I've got lots of seedlings,  so  now I've  dedcided to keep a log / diary of what grows each day...Then I;ll get them potted on...In a few weeks time they'll be ready to go on my website page listings then I'll start selling them and also planting some of them out in my veg beds for fresh very tasty vegetables...

Think I'll add a few pictures of my plants.

These are 2 of the plants which I grow...

4pm There's loads happening in the new propagator today the italian plum tomato's have all germinated, and all 5 pumpkins and 6 courgettes are now all growing, there's another gleditsia sapling too...I'm going to leave them in the propagator for another few days then pot them all on, then in 8-12 weeks time the veg plants can go outside.
So i'm going to be quite busy...I do prefer to be out there , getting things ready for the nursery.
And I know there's plenty to be getting on with, as of tomorrow I can start to move back into my potting shed and it needs a major tidy out and sweep up in there...
And the out side of the greenhouse, planting area needs a good sweep down too....

So that's what I;ll be up to for the next few days....

After a good morning at the unit, I decided that as the weather was so nice I must have dome time out in the nursery, It was lovely and sunny and quite warm for this time of year...

I managed to finish off tiding out the greenhouse and had a good sweep up too, as there was a lot of soil and leaves that needed removing....
i had to pot up more seedlings to,today there were even more seeding germinated, and I've sown some new seeds too...

The eucalyptus gunnii have all germinated so has the austrailian pumkin tree and tooth ache plant, there are still a few things out of the first batch to show signs yet, I'll just have to be paitent...

John has been very helpful with ideas for things to sell...All the plants I potted up yeaterday are doing really well and hopefully all the rest that I potted up to day will be ok...It looks like it might just freeze again tonight as the skies have started to clear again, but I did cover all the new seedlings up so they dhould be ok for tonight...

My new thermometre is working well today it reached a high of 10oC 50oF, but has started to drop down again now...
I'm going to try and keep a record of the temp. each day...Mainly for my own records, but thouhgt it might just interest one or two others....

Anyway I hope to spend some of tomorrow out on the nursery I've got a few things ready to plant out...

It's rather damp well wet here on the nursery and theres a few puddles around..Hopefully the weather will be nice again tomorrow I'm getting quite fed up with all this wind and rain I need to spend alot of time out in the nursery over the next few weeks getting thing ready for the spring sale...and then for my day at the Help 4 Heroes event in June...I've got lots of baskets to make and tubs to pot up....as a well as getting vegetable plants ready to plant and sell....

I'm also looking forward to being able cut fresh flowers to this year, I only grew a few plants last year...I've got a lot more this year, a better range of flowers....

I'm getting another veg box later this week too, as my little christmas trees need there own growing area....

I have 20 1-2 feet tall christmas trees all will be ready again for sale from November...

There's lots of bulbs just waiting to burst in to flower as well...
Mainly grown in pots as there easier for me to move around and I think they last abit longer too..

I'm not going down to the nursery today, as everything was ok yesterday, the new propagator is doing really well. we now have pansy seedlings as well as echium, lavender and cosmos all for cutting flowers...
The only thing I do need to do is pot up the eucalyptus seedlings as there getting quite big now...

The weather started off well today sunny but a chilly wind now it's gone cloudy. Looks like it will possibly rain again...typical english weather...

I must do some pruning in the shrub bed too this week one or two plants have got a bit straggly and need taking control of before they start growing again in the spring....
I have a large buddeia which need cutting right back to around 2 foot its about 7 foot at the moment to big and it's trying to take over the shrub bed, and I also have a 9 foot eucalytus tree which was planted as a small growing shrub but decided it wanted to be a tree instead...I want it to be mor bushy, so I'll cut the top out as I have done two years ago...it grew up again...so This time I'm going to keep cutting the branches out...

Tomorrow I'll be out in the nursery most of the day as well as looking after Edward of course, if it's nice he can have a play outside for a bit ,the fresh air will do him good....and me too....

I could really do with several nice days so I can get some work done on the shrub bed as there a few plants which are in real need of a good pruning....
I do hope I might be able to spend a short time out on the nursery tomorrow as I'll be at home all day...
John's already said he'll look after Edward for me....

The new propagator has produced many great seedling there will be more to plant up very soon to get them germinated, I've got a lot more salad type seeds to get growing including, lambs lettuce, land cress, spicy salad leaves, minzuna and one of my very favorites, rocket...

  8. Wednesday 16th Feb 2011.

After a busy morning tiding out the potting shed I've finally been able to get to work in there now.
I.ve potted up loads of seedlings and sown my salad leaves, which should only take a couple of days to germinate.

I've also just noticed that the bolotto beans are all popping up so they'll need potting on very soon...All of last weeks seedling are doing really well even though we've had quite a few nights with a frost...they're all covered up in the greenhouse the pumpkins and courgettes have started to produce there second leaves which is a very good sign that there doing well.

The tomato's "Garten Perle" are doing really well nice upright seedlings as like all tomato seedlings they can get abit leggy these are staying short, but have started to produce there second leaves too...

I also have a lovely little laburnum tree and the gleditsia's are growing well.. There are also 3 pumpkin tree seedlings now all potted up.
I also just noticed that a dessert rose has started to grow..these are rather rare. The type that i'm growing this year have red and black flowers, I grow 2 last year but unfortunately I lost both of them in one of the hard frosts....
Hopefully the ones that I'm growing this year will be alot hardier as I've started them much earlier this year...

I'm now busy trying to decided what else I should grow, flower wise...I have lots of nice flowers already started off,I just need a few more unusual types to grow...

I've planted up a few nice pots as well with heathers and bulbs they look really nice and will probably sell quite well.....They usually do....and i've also got some spring hanging baskets ready.....All the tomato's "Garten perle" are now in single potsas they've started to produce there 2nd and 3rd sets of leaves...I hope to spend a bit of time out there tomorrow...

All the pots I did yesterday are looking very good this morning all the plants are now upright the some of the bulbs have opened too....

Next week I will be getting a new cold frame and a small veg box which will be used for the small christmas trees to grow in....as at the moment they ar using up vaulable space in one of the veg beds...so next week I'm going to be very busy again...building and planting....

Just checked the weather and it should be getting a bit warmer toward the end of the week..

I didn't do anything on the nursery today as I've been to busy with everything else....I did check everything was ok this morning and it was and everything growing in the propagator is doing well today....
I'm going to be a home and out on the nursery for the next few days so I should be able to get plenty done out there...
Over the next few days John will be designing and making me a few coldframes all made from GRP (fibreglass) as I've found that they are far to expensive to buy in the garden centres.....Hopefully the first one will be in place by the weekend.....and we both think we should be able to sell a few through my website and ebay....I'll have to keep you posted about what happens....

Well it wasn't exactly fit to do anything outside this morning.and most of the afternoon too...But we did get an hour of sunshine so I got out on the nursery for that hour, I did get a few more seedlings potted up and sowed a few more seeds aswell.
Tomorrow I hope to get out there for a few hours so I can tidy out one of the display areas and put some plants into it....And if anymore seeds have germinated I'll have to get them potted up too....
Everything in the small greenhouse is doing well, and I've quite a few nice winter flowering plants out at the moment one of my favorites being my beautiful Hamamelis mollis which is very heavily scented with bright yellow flowers, and I also have a small Vibrunum bodnantense "Dawn" in flower which is also heavily scented and all my snowdrops have now started to flower and so have the crocus's I have white, yellow and purple flowering of those...I'm looking forward to all my little narcisus flowering in March they are covered in buds but not ready to open just yet....
I also have a few nice flowering heathers out at the moment too...So there's lots to look at the moment....I'm looking forward to spring and I know I'm going to be very busy throuhgout the summer....Lady Sarah.

I just had 2 days away from the nursery...un well in pain with my knees and hip again...I'm still suffering, but I do need to go down to the nursery later to check everything is ok...

I'm going to be taking things easy for a few days now as I really wanted to spend some more time outside on the nursery, but couldn't as I couldn't get around much the last few days...

I think that the weather hasn't helped my arthritis much as at the moment we keep having a few warm days the two or three cold damp days, I would really like it to get warmer so I could get around more easier...

Anyway John is helping me alot again today...Hope that everyone out there is doing ok..Lady Sarah.

  20. Sunday 27th Feb.

Quiet day today, not a lot happening although I have another batch of bolotto beans that have germinated over night, I have another 15 now...

The propagator is still working really well and some of my more unusual seeds a starting to germimate now.

The dessert rose seedling is doing really well but, I've decided to leave it in the propagator untilit's at least 1 inch tall so I know it'll be good and strong then I found another picture of the dessert rose the other day it grows very strange, it has a large tuberus trunk with branches growing of it in neat layers butonly grows to around 8 inches tall, which is good as it will be able to grow indoors permantly...

I will have to go and check how everything is doing out on the nursery later as we had quite a cold night last night and frost again but only a light one -2oC which wasn't to bad as it had cloulded over by the morning and had all but gone by 8-30am when I got up...

Anyway I must sign off for a while now, I'll be back later I think....Lady Sarah.
